Winter Clearance Sale [Jan. 17th, 2007|03:06 pm]
Hi y'all, I just wanted to post to announce a kind of understated, unanticipated Winter Clearance Sale at Parcell Press. We're making an impromptu move across state lines in just a couple of weeks, and I'd love to clear out some of the inventory I've got right now in order to make moving a little easier. My crates of zines are simultaneously the heaviest and most cumbersome of all of my belongings, and I'd much rather get them out in the mail instead of packing them into a truck and unloading them in a new place.

So, this sale is lasting indefinitely -- although I predict I'll have to start packing the office up no later than the 25th or 26th of January at which point I will be going on a very, VERY temporary hiatus until February.

To make all of this more appealing, I'm offering free shipping on all US orders over $15.00. And I've got loads of freebies and catalogs and other things that I'd love to stuff your packages with.

Thanks!!
Taylor

olds and news? [Oct. 31st, 2006|05:02 pm]
Hey y'all, I posted this everywhere else (myspace, parcellpress.com, etc.) so I figured I might as well post it on the old LJ. Haven't really used this in a few months. I've got loads and loads of new zines in stock, so stop on by and check them out.
www.parcellpress.com
___

It's starting get cold, which means I'm starting to get bummed out about it. Another good, hot summer has passed and I'm back to snifling, drinking tea, and fighting a losing battle against the perennial mice in my attic. And walls. And sometimes kitchen. It's not all bad, though. Everyone likes a good flannel shirt or a white-skied snow day every once in a while, right? If you're in the same boat, then you're probably looking a bit forward to having a meteorological excuse to catch up on reading. It's true, now's a great time to stock up on zines for your winter hibernation. Order some zines and I'll be sure to throw in some special ingreidents for winter projects.

In more tangible news, Parcell Press has been royally screwed over by the man. If you haven't heard, record/book store giant Tower Records has closed up shop (despite however normal their online store appears). Here's an article in the Washington Post that gives a little more insight and details, all the while remaining largely sympathetic. Tower Records had a history of being friendly to zines thanks to their long-time zine buyer Clint Johns, so when they offered to take a large amount of copies of the Ms. Films DIY Guide to Film & Video off my hands back in May, I didn't even bother hesitating. Unfortunately, Tower Records filed for bankruptcy a week or two before they had to cut me a check for the books. Now, months later, that check has yet to arrive and likely won't. Certainly there are hundreds of other zinesters, small publishers, and indie record labels whose accounts receivable from Tower won't be received. I imagine they're all typing out this same narrative on their respective websites or blogs, though, so I'll stick to mine. Because Tower Records took 1/5 of my stock of the Ms. Films book, not only do they owe me a significant amount of money, but they're also in posession of a great many of my product, of which I have no remaining copies in stock. Of course I've attempted to have the unsold inventory returned to me, but to no avail. All inventory is now owned by the liquidator, Great American, who bought Tower Records out. And the last I heard, copies of the Ms. Films DIY Guide to Film & Video were being sold at a deep discount at the Tower Records "Going out of Business Sale." Great American, indeed. Those books were free to them, but cost me a great deal of money, effort, and time.

So, in closing, I'd like to make a few small suggestions. If, after reading the above paragraph, you feel so inclined to go to your local Tower Records and pay for a copy of the Ms. Films DIY Guide to Film & Video, you're a pathetic loser. Don't do that. Take it if you want it, but don't pay for it. Or better yet, do Parcell Press and Ms. Films a huge favor by preordering a copy of the book. I'm trying to raise enough money to do a second printing to match the high demand that the first one inspired, and to hopefully make back some of my rent and grocery money that Tower Records is walking around with. They've given us all one more reason to watch where our money -- and books -- go. It's just too dirty when a giant topples, even if he was a friendly one.

On a lighter note, I'd love to hear from you, about this or about anything at all. Drop me a line sometime. taylor@parcellpress.com

I'm back! [Sep. 13th, 2006|08:22 pm]
Hey ya'll! I had a great summer break (well, parts of it were great), but now I'm ready to get back to business. I've got a brand-new office and a lot of work to do. Help me get rolling again by loading up on zines so I can make room for more.

(no subject) [Jul. 8th, 2006|07:29 pm]
Just a note to anyone who routinely sends mail to me. The Parcell Press address at 428 Hunter Street is no longer valid. I have yet to secure a proper mailing address worth publicizing, so keep this word on the zine street for now: "e-mail Taylor before sending him anything!" taylor@parcellpress.com

thanks ya'll.

new zines [Aug. 30th, 2005|02:16 am]
Hi, I've added a couple new zines to the catalog this evening:

KER-BLOOM! #55 - A 100% letterpressed personal zine containing a single personal essay. This one's all about how author Artnoose got her nickname, and the subsequent complications that come from having two names. Limited copies available.

RADICAL SOUTH - A new zine put together by Niku, whose other work includes the Ms. Films DIY Guide to Film & Video. Radical South includes listings on progressive, radical resources all throughout the Southern United States. A helpful resource for travelers, residents, or friends.

I've also restocked these two titles:

RATION #3 and #4 - Smart, short, autobiographical writing. Life stories scripted as if they were fiction.

I'll be continuing to (hopefully) quickly add new titles in the coming days, as I've got a stack of new zines to work through.

new zines [Aug. 23rd, 2005|02:36 am]
Here are four new zines that I added to the catalog this evening:

ALTAR MAGAZINE #5 - Interviews (Amy Ray and more), articles (a mother's first protest with her infant daughter, gay nursing homes, tales of an ovum donor, pornagraphy and men's choices, more), and more.

THE ORDER OF THE SACRED HIPPOPOTAMI #1 - A personal zine containing two essays (one on the author's jealousy regarding men's ability to pee standing up, another on her love of cigarette smoking), and a piece of fiction.

CHINESE SWEATSHOP #3 - A very intense art zine with pull-outs, inserts, trinkets, and lots of stuff thrown onto almost every page. Also includes some recipes, and articles that provide a glimpse into Chinese culture.

LIST #7 - A zine that is exactly what it sounds like: a collection of lists on various topics ("pets I've had in my life," "things I've accomplished this summer," etc.), plus a section of found lists and contributed lists.

new zines [Aug. 18th, 2005|01:04 am]
Hi everyone,
Here is a quick-list of all the most recent additions to the Parcell Press catalog. This is also another reminder to please join the Parcell Press monthly E-mail newsletter club. I'll be giving more cohesive and complete updates through it, along with all kinds of shit you'll never know or find out about without being a friend of Parcell Press. The signup information is on my website.

LITTLE THUNDERCLOUD - a personal zine written in stream-of-consciousness style.

LOVELY UGLY CRUEL WORLD #7, #8, #10 - "a serial comic by AR about important things, like life, death, cigarettes, and getting over high school."

MAKING STUFF & DOING THINGS - this is aptly subtitled "a DIY guide to doing just about everything." Includes over 115 sets of instructions divided into 15 categories. An essential resource.

THE CIA MAKES SCIENCE FICTION UNEXCITING #3 - the zine for dissidents, this issue "takes a look at the way the PATRIOT Act and post 9/11 'security' changed our civil liberties and infringed upon basic American rights."

PHILLY ZINE FEST DIARY 2005 - Elsie of Chinese Sweatshop zine put together a detailed chronicle of her time at this year's Philly Zine Fest.

ELEPHANT MESS #15 - this issue of Dan's zine is the "unreviews" issue and includes unreviews of dumpster diving, writing as a career, and idaho, to name a few.

THE MEDIA WHORE FEMINIST LITERATURE REVIEW - an issue of Media Whore with a swollen review section with lots to say about lots of feminist page turners in both book and zine format.

BROKEN - another artist-book style creation from Elsie of Chinese Sweatshop zine. A rubber-stamped poem serves as the zine's text, and the visuals are mixed media.

new zines [Aug. 1st, 2005|11:50 am]
Hi, here's a list of all of the zines I've added to the catalog since July 14th. Keep in mind that if you're real interested in keeping up with catalog additions and the like, you should probably join my e-mailing list (there's a form on my website) as I'm planning to do more with the newsletter than with the LiveJournal posts.

THE CONSTANT RIDER OMNIBUS - public transportation stories!

MAKE SOMETHING! - an anthology of work from Portland, OR-based zinesters.

COFFEESHOP CRUSHES - "love and lust in coffee establishments." A real classic zine for only a buck.

INVINCIBLE SUMMER ANTHOLOGY - a book of Nicole's terrific zine Invincible Summer. Lots of good stories, illustrations and the like.

LOLLYPOP SHOVED UP MY ASS #3 - a cut-and-paste Canadian zine.

CROQ #1 - a DIY guide and print forum for creative people of all kinds.

A MILLION BIRTHDAYS #6 - a well-written, introspective issue of Kathee's solid zine.

KING-CAT COMICS & STORIES #64 - the latest issue of this long-running comic zine that includes stories and artwork that focuses on the sudden death of author John's father.

PAPING #9 - recently restocked in the Parcell Press catalog! This great comic zine is 100% two-color screenprinted on every page and follows the story of the author's lost bike and his elementary school students' attempts to help him find it.

PAPING #10 - an indie artists' compilation, this includes comics and stories that all deal with the artists' fathers. A great collection.

PAPING #11 - the newest issue of Paping, the theme is "us and them," and is another indie artists' compilation, including work from ten artists.

What a terrific bunch of zines.
So come on over to the site and buy up some of these new ones. I can guarantee that the issues of Paping and the Invincible Summer Anthology won't remain in stock for long.

All US orders over $35 receive free shipping.
